When was the last time anyone here had an engine overhauled? It seemed common when I was a kid. A lot of people are driving cars and pickups today that have over 200,000 miles on them and don’t look that bad. When I was a kid it was noteworthy to have a car get substantially more than 100,000 miles before it was ready for the scrapyard. One consumer good that has substantially gone up in price is the automobile, but look at all the luxury features that most common new cars have that even Rolls Royce didn’t offer 40 years ago. We think of Mexico as a poor country, but there are many countries that think of Mexico as being a rich country. People do not appreciate how well off we are. The natural state of man is impoverishment. My buddy of course discounted all of that and found some excuse to claim all that stuff had no impact. And that doesn’t even count the welfare programs that 1/3 of Americans enjoy. Rockefeller had none of this stuƒf – except the cars and living space. And all this stuff is not just for the rich, ordinary Americans use all of it. I pointed out to him all the modern appliances we use that were not available 60 years ago- computers, printers, digital cameras, cell phones, cellphone cameras, air-conditioning, microwave ovens, two-car and three-car families, more living space, color TV’s, huge screen TV’s, video and audio recording devices, you name it. He was trying to convince me that average standards of living have not increased in the last 60 years, since the 1960’s. I once had a debate with a liberal friend of mine about standards of living in the U.S. ![]() Many people have no idea of the mountain of wealth we have in this country, spread even among the lower economic classes. Whenever I would cite that statistic, even to conservatives, they usually didn’t believe me. who make about $32,000.00 per year are in the top 1% of wage earners world-wide. ![]() I remember about 10 years ago Rush Limbaugh quoting the statistic that people in the U.S.
